Rock climbing is a sport which has become a favourite of many on both the participation and spectator level. This has quickly led to a lot of organisations and clubs being formed.
Alpine Clubs
Within the category of rock climbing falls mountaineering. This is a collection of activities such as skiing, rock climbing and a few others. Mountaineering has always been popular, and the first club to support it dates back to 1857, when it originated in London. This is a prestigious club as it supports those who do alpine climbs and tackle many of the other mountainous terrains throughout the world.
Climbing Organisations
Anyone who is into rock climbing will usually want to be part of a club and join some of the organisations. The choices will depend on where one lives and what is available to them. Rock climbing is a worldwide sport, so there are organisations within each country to support their athletes.
The UK
The UK is very well known for this sport and for the various organisations and clubs which are found here. For example:
- Association of British Climbing Walls:
This is an organisation supporting indoor climbing. They are there to promote the safety of those who enjoy this sport. They are doing this with the development of standards which are safe practices, as they relate to the structures that are used in indoor rock climbing activities.
The United States
The US has many different organisations, some of which are spin-offs from other countries and some that are distinct.
- The American Alpine Club:
This association has categorised themselves as a national climbing family based on their large membership. They have earned the title of being the largest club of this type in the nation.
- American Mountain Guides Association:
Another prestigious organisation which supports another sector of the rock climbing industry. These guys play a critical role in the sport and need to have their support and peer groups.
Canada
Canada is a strong supporter of the rock climbing sport, and almost every province has a good selection of clubs and organisations.
Climbing Escalade Canada
The focus of this organisation is very similar to many of the others. Their mandate is to support the Canadian rock climbing athletes with the desire to generate more interest in the sport.
Without the support of the organisations and clubs, the sport would likely suffer. Many of these organisations work together collectively.
