Types of Rock Climbing

dylan 6 June, 2019

Often the interest in rock climbing comes at a very young age. There are not too many kids who don’t take to this type of activity by nature. They will climb just about anything. Then, many go on to wanting to become involved in this as a sport. They often soon discover that there is more to rock climbing than just the basics. There are different variations, and the first challenge they are facing is, which is more attractive to them?

Bouldering

When this term is used in the rock climbing world, novices tend to think this is the type of climb for kids. The basics used for this are shoes fit for climbing, chalk and a crash pad. Bouldering is one of the activities which many of the rock climbing gyms offer.

Free Climbing

This form of rock climbing is often the one which a new climber will start with because it revolves around the basics. It also has the safety feature of a rope that acts as a harness, along with a partner who is on the ground, keeping hold of the rope to break a fall if necessary. Within this category of climbing, it is separated into two forms. These are sport climbing and traditional climbing.

Free Solo Climbing

Some say that free solo climbing is taking the activity to the next level. It is also included as the type with more risks. This is because no tools or equipment of any kind are used.

Aid Climbing

Climbers rely on various types of equipment to assist them with their climbs and descents. Pitons and chocks are used.

Deep Water Soloing

One of the elements of danger with rock climbing is what is beneath the climber should they fall. Another version of rock climbing is deep water soloing which doesn’t use a rope. The safety feature relied on here, in the case of an accident, is a collection of deep water to help break the climber’s fall.

Making the Choice

Once an individual has totally made up their mind that rock climbing is for them, then they can experiment and eventually decide which particular version they like the best. Or just keep enjoying them all. It will also depend on whether a new climber hopes to become competitive in this sport.
